Chapter Ten

I slammed the door behind me, flopping down on my bed with a groan. The thought of that skank Henley wrapped around Sawyer made my chest burn with jealousy.

The reasonable part of my brain knew I had no reason to feel this way - he said he hadn't been with her since we met. But this irrational, self-destructive voice inside that I never knew existed was playing up my insecurities.

There was a quiet knock at the bedroom door.

"Come in," I mumbled.

Sawyer turned the knob softly, peeking in with a gentle apology in his eyes. He stepped inside with a tentative smile. "Lila, please understand. It was never anything serious, and I haven't thought about her once since the night we met. If I'd known you had even existed somewhere in the world, I never would have so much as spoken to that girl."

A warmth spread through my chest when I met those tender brown eyes from across the room. With his hands shoved in his pockets and sadness pulling at his lips, he looked especially vulnerable. My heart began to pound, the blood flowing pleasantly through my body.

"I don't like her," I pouted, standing up and moving towards him. I pushed him down onto the bench of my vanity, and curled up in his lap.

"I am not much of a fan myself," he admitted, his voice soft. I let the scent of him wash over me like the tide, soothing the storm in my chest.

"I've never felt like this before, Sawyer. If a guy I was seeing wanted someone else, he could have had her with my blessing. This whole thing is brand new to me," I admitted with a self-conscious shrug.

"I don't want her - I never have," he swore. "It only happened a few times, and on every occasion, it was she who initiated it."

I cringed, a mental picture of her spread out on his desk taunting me from behind my eyelids.

"Has she tried to initiate anything recently?" I prepared myself for an answer I knew I wasn't going to like.

"Yes. But I do not believe she will try again. I told her firmly that there was someone else." He cupped my face in his hands, his thumbs stroking sweetly over my cheeks.

"How did she handle that?" I asked as I bit down on my lip.

A ghost of a smile crossed his lips. "You don't have to worry, Lila. I've never felt like this before either, and I have no intention of ruining things with you over some tawdry affair with my secretary."

I swallowed hard, trying my best to push Henley and her smug grin to the darkest corners of my mind.

"I think, perhaps, you need to be reminded that you drive me absolutely crazy," he whispered, nuzzling into the crook of my neck. His warm breath fanned over my skin, leaving goosebumps in its wake.

"Do I?"

"Indeed, Miss Gray. I can't concentrate, can't focus on anything but the minutes until I can see you again." He tugged my earlobe between his teeth, and I shivered in response.
